'Insufferable, outspoken, [and] overbearing' cousin begs to go to wedding, then shows up uninvited: 'Complete lack of self awareness'

Trying to attend an event you weren't invited to is one of those awkward experiences that you only try to do once.

Most people want to seem chill, composed, and put together. They want to be the cool friend who gets invited to parties and is a sparkling conversationalist. Cool people don't beg for things. If they're not invited to a party, they don't go. If their friend doesn't answer their texts anymore, they move on to a person who wants to make plans. And if they can tell that a group of people don't want them around, they know they have plenty of other things that they can do with their time. 

For many people, sensing when you're not wanted is something you learn in middle school, when your snarky teen friends will be brutally honest about how much they care for your presence. We carry that into adulthood, but adults tend to be more passive-aggressive about these things. If they're throwing a party you're not invited to, they'll say something like, "Oh, I'm so sorry, there's just not enough room for any more guests. But let's schedule a coffee date next week!" You both know that it's a little white lie, but that's just how the world works.

    I had a very small destination wedding about 10 hours from my hometown, but only two hours from a fairly major city, which is where most of the guests flew into. It is also where my dad's cousin and her husband live.

    It's really strange that the cousin is so desperate to be involved where she's not wanted. Doesn't she care at all when people clearly dislike her presence? I just wonder what she's getting out of all this effort, aside from attention from the other guests and the bride.
